Port Coquitlam Marlins Coaches

Marlin’s coaching staff are paid members of the team. Coaches cannot vote in an annual general meeting or at executive meetings. The Head Coach attends the meetings during most of the year, advising the executive on technical matters. The coaching staff is normally comprised of students working their way through University. Because of this, we have been fortunate in recent years to qualify for government grants to assist in paying their salaries. The minimum level of technical qualification we require include current certificates in:

• N.L.S.
• WATER SAFETY INSTRUCTORS I
• N.C.C.P. LEVEL 1
• Criminal check by the RCMP

The Role of the Coaching Staff

The coaching staff provides the technical expertise in how to train and to swim the strokes correctly. They encourage our athletes, dealing with each individual’s strengths and weaknesses. They provide guidance and leadership at Events Schedule and in practices. The coaches are committed to helping each Marlin have a successful season. As a courtesy, should you wish to discuss a topic with a coach, please do so before or after a practice. During practice times coaches prefer to put 100% concentration into the swimmers in the water. Thanks for your cooperation. Coaches’ authority prevails at both practices and at meets. The Coaches’ expectations regarding behavior (attendance, attitude, and commitment) must be met by the team members. Our coaches have the authority to discipline team members when required. This may mean simple talks, progressing to asking a disruptive swimmer to sit out a practice, scratching a swimmer from a relay team, to ultimately involving the Coaches Committee to review a swimmer’s problems with a parent(s).

Should you have concerns or questions regarding our coaches, you are encouraged to write to our Coaches Committee c/o the 1st Vice President.

Head Coach:   Mike Wylie

Head coach Mike Wylie is happy and excited to be returning to the Marlins for a 5th year. Mike’s swimming career began as a 5 year old who couldn’t pass his swimming lesson levels, as a result, his parents registered him with the Surrey Sea Lions swim club for “just one summer”, as an opportunity to work on his strokes and improve his endurance. Little did they know what they created! Swimming became a passion for the whole family. Mike’s love for the sport of swimming started right away, he enjoyed success in the BCSSA, including breaking several regional and provincial records before deciding to swim year-around at the age of 13. During his time with the Hyack Swim Club, Mike developed into a top ranked age group swimmer to a senior national finalist. Upon graduation from high school, Mike went on to swim for Simon Fraser University where he was a 4 time NAIA All-American, SFU and NAIA record holder in the 50 and 100 meter breaststroke. Mike was a constant presence in the breaststroke finals at Canadian Nationals/Trial Championships (Including Olympic Trials), and also competed on the World Cups circuit between 1998 -2002. Mike is excited for the upcoming summer swim season and is looking forward to building on last years’ strong showing at 2011 provincial championships.
